Jaakko Putkonen, Department Chair
Welcome!
At the Department of Earth and Environmental Science we are a community of learners providing a safe and supportive environment for students at all levels. Our young and energetic faculty conducts internationally recognized research on a variety of topics ranging from deep Earth interior to ground surface and water in soil and rivers.
We are devoted to the education of future generations of Earth scientists and we introduce the students to the wide array of exciting careers within the field. We educate graduate students to become leaders in academia and industry. At EES our students get hands-on experiences operating cutting-edge instruments and the students learn the practical skills needed to become a Geologist or an Environmental Scientist.
We are especially strong in the areas of Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geomorphology, and Hydrology. In addition to studying the fundamental questions in Geology, we also strive to tackle geological and environmental issues that are relevant to today’s inhabitants of the Earth, including the scarcity and quality of drinking water, shortage of critical minerals for electronics, and the expanding dangers of forest fires.
We would love to tell you more about our program, scholarships, and field trips.
